Well the inevitable has finally happened. I really do not have much to say about this subject at all, but it is the only thing really worth noting from a rather unforgettable type of game. The Pirates' sure do have a knack for playing meaningless September baseball, don't they? But the game on Sunday is much, much, more than some meaningless September game, as it was history making.
The Bucs as we all know tied the mark for most consecutive losing seasons in all of professional sports, as they tied the Phillies mark of 16 straight seasons. This mark is so unreal. The Pirates have become the Will E. Coyote of sports. Heck even in all of those John Wayne-like western Hollywood movies, the Indians had a better winning percentage than the Pirates have had in these 16 years.
Really my one question from all of this is; will it end next year? Right now it does not look that good that it will. We will own the record for ineptitude. I hope that the new management's plan is the light end at the end of the tunnel, but it seems really dark looking down at it.
I will say this though about the game today, if anything the Pirates picked the right time and place to do this. I am not saying it was planned but matching the mark on the west coast, against another team playing meaningless baseball, and on the same day the all hallowed Steelers open their season, was almost a gift from the baseball gods. People will talk about the Pirates matching the Phillies, but the general populace will not hear it, for it is Steeler season and nothing else really matters.
I can only hope that some day it will be Pirate season, and nothing else matters.
