Untuck Those Shirts

"He is looking for one pitch here, and if he gets it, he is going to come out of his shoes." - John Wehner, prior to T.J. Beam's 2-0 pitch that Prince Fielder deposited in the outfield bleachers.
You know, if you get past that thick Pittsburghese from Carrick's own John Wehner, he seems knows what he is talking about. I had just flipped the game back on to see Beam start to work to Fielder, when I heard that quote. Immediately I knew that I must somehow name John Wehner the next Nostradamus, or at least Kreskin.

At the beginning of the game, I thought to myself that we would once again just lay down to another team that is challenging for the playoffs. It looked good early on, as the Brewers jumped out early, but the Bucs came back immediately after, only to have this happen in the ninth.

I guess the Pirates are just trying to find ways to continue to tease me for as long as this season goes on. I don't know if anyone else feels that way. Try as I might to just say move on something new happens. For example the abrupt ending of the Pedro Alvarez case, or rather what appears like it to me.

Another example just hit the news today with Brandon Moss' knee. This story seems to be the next in a long line of head scratching incidents with the Pirates and their medical staff. Since it is a knee I am immediately drawn to think of Jody Gerut, who seemingly always wanted to put off surgery, and the recent bout with Jason Bay's knee. What has the comparison to Gerut fitting so well is that Moss gave this quote to Dejan in the PG:
"I'll take into account what they say," Moss said. "But I know my body, and I know I feel fine."
That sounds like someone does not like what the Pirate doctors told him. I can only hope that he values the opinons of the other doctor he is going to see and if he does need surgery he gets it. The last thing we would need is anther Jody Gerut on the roster.

Of course a conspiracy theorist would speculate that they are using this need for surgery to put Moss on the 60 Day DL, thus clearing a spot on the 40 man for Pedro Alvarez. That seems far fetched. I guess maybe I don't need much to get me to keep on thinking about the Pirates this season.

The 60 day DL conspiracy theory does not make much sense. Since all players come off the 60 day DL at the conclusion of the World Series, a team can put any current 15 day DL player such as Gorzo (which is what the Bucs did) on the 60 day DL and not impact the team.

More importantly from where I'm sitting, if Brandon Moss is seriously debilitated or otherwise injured for the long haul, the Jason Bay trade goes from debatable to horrendous. Andy LaRoche looks like a total bust. He now has more than 300 major league at bats and sports a nifty .185 career batting average. Not even Tom Prince (the worst hitter as a Pirates position player I've ever seen in my lifetime) was that awful, and that's saying a whole lot. Meanwhile we got nothing from Wild Thing Hansen, which leaves us hoping that Brian Morris can somehow stay healthy, and that Brandon Moss can somehow recover and resume his promising career.

If Moss can pick up where he left off, and if Morris can realize his considerable potential, between those two guys we'd have a semi-acceptable return for Bay. Not great, but you can live with it. If Moss and Morris are derailed by injury, and if LaRoche and Hansen continue to look like nobodies....

Whew.
