What to Say

As I said yesterday it really does seem that the Pirates are just lying down to anybody and everybody. There is absolutely no fight at all with this team. It is rather pathetic, especially when one considers the way the team last year played at this point in the season.

This last game in Houston almost seemed to follow some sort of script that the team has been following all year. Scene 1 is poor starting pitching, followed by poor hitting, followed by poor hitting. I would think you could explain that to any idiot and they would be able to gigure out that the Pirates just have not been good this year.

Just look at Zach Duke from tonight. He gave up 6 runs, granted not all were earned, but still 6 runs in only 4.2 innings. He now has put up a whopping 5-12 record, which believe it or not is tied, yes tied, for third best total wins on the entire team. Heck our 'Ace' Paul Maholm is 8-8. Here is another, Phil Dumatrait, who has not pitched since July 7th, has 3 wins. It is just incredible how horrible the pitching is.

I wish I could go on, but I really can't. It all speaks for itself anymore. To be honest I really don't know how the professional writers can go on covering this stuff. Can we please have some more Pedro Alvarez news? At least that is interesting.

You're absolutely right. The team that seemed to have so much heart, grit, and fight in them earlier in the season have just laid down and given up.

You know that I'm usually an optimist, but I'm seriously wondering if this team will be able to stumble upon another win this season. Sure there's the luck factor and just the nature of baseball in general, but still...

The Bucs have 16 changes to NOT lose 14 games and have a 100-loss season. That's something to strive for, right?

The way this team has been playing it seems as though it will be a struggle to win 2 more games, especially considering the competition.

Agreed. It's a shame and a disgrace. I love the Pirates, but the way this team has been run ...

I've said elsewhere that this year's Pirates pitching staff is far and away the worst I have ever seen in 29 years of watching the team. Jeff Andrews must be sweating bullets by now. He was supposed to be the cure for what ails Zach Duke, among other things. Who'da thunk we'd actually look at some of Dave Littlefield's staffs with envy? Seriously: the one thing Littlefield usually did well was assemble an effective bullpen year in and year out. Granted, that doesn't help much when the rest of your organization is in shambles, but it DOES help some.

Anyway, this team's pitching has been horrible with the exceptions of Paul Maholm (who would have won close to 20 games with any support at all), John Grabow, Matt Capps and Phil Dumatrait when they were healthy, and---sort of---Jeff Karstens. That's it.

If Zach Duke is on this team next season it will be another long year.
